Ethan Reilly – voice and programming

ER: Having done some sequencing for my band (A Day in the Life, Penny Lane, etc.) I, in a moment of madness, decided to climb the Everest of pop music computer replication, Hesperus. (I know, attempting to reproduce BJ with a computer is a laughable notion, but as I said, it was temporary insanity).

The challenge was to come as close as possible to the original work, using only my little home set-up. The listener, therefore, will kindly judge it by that criterion – and not its breathtaking lack of innovation!

The odd ending is a signature of sorts, intended to demonstrate my exhaustion with the project (Hesperus and A Salty Dog together took me about six 20-to-40 hour weeks). The tail features a Fisher lick from AWSoP, Pop Goes The Weasel, Popeye the Sailor Man, a Wily Coyote whistle and a toy piano playing the Hesperus ending refrain.

Aside from the vocal overdub, everything is one pass of the sequence, direct to DAT, using a Mac Performa 630CD with Logic, and an Alesis S4+ (with a dash of Roland XP 80).
